Pink Pointers 2010 Sweden

•August 20, 2010 • Leave a Comment

The Pink Pointers entered the 45+ division however found no other teams entered in that age group, so …  in order to compete had to enter the 30+ age group and play the ‘Olympics Club’ hailing from the USA and the 35+ age group and play the Swedish team.

Both teams were fabulous girls playing top quality polo.  Next comp however we would like them to bring  their mothers so we can play against women of our own age group !!!

How did the Pink Pointers do ?????   Silver against the Olympics Club  and Gold against the Swedish team.

2010 Pink Pointers International

The Pink Pointers have evolved into the Pink Pointers International with the much anticipated introduction of 3 English Roses to the team line-up.

The only remaining originals are Susan Murphy, Leonie Boyanich, Jo Parnell-Koski and Coach Mike Stacey.  With so many of the original members having to pull out for personal reasons, 2010 saw the introduction of Goalkeeper extraordinaire Jane Purdie, doyen Australian player Betty Anderson, strategician and valued lefty ! Fiona Pixley and the youthful powerhouse, Janet Leo.

Then to add the International flavour Fiona suggested the introduction of 3 ‘English Roses’ she played with in England back in the 1980′s; Pippa Jones, Brenda Grace and Linzi Gaywood.  It only took a few emails to discover they had the required characteristics for becoming a Pink Pointer …. a GREAT sense  of humour !!!

Back Row : Susan Murphy, Fiona Pixley, Janet Leo.    Front Row : Betty Anderson, Leonie Boyanich, Jane Purdie.

Absent Jo Koski, coach Mike Stacey, English Roses brenda Grace, Pippa Jones and Linzi Gaywood.

Pink Pointers History

•June 17, 2010 • Leave a Comment

The Pink Pointers were formed in 2007 in readiness for the F.I.N.A. World Masters Competition held in Perth Western Australia April 2008.The team was formed with ladies, originally from opposing clubs, who began playing in the West Australian Water polo Associations competition 30 years ago.The name originated from the fact that the ladies registered their team with the ‘Dolphins Water Polo Club’.  So it started with something to do with Dolphins …..  that evolved into a shark theme ….. then White Pointers because they are lethal in Australian waters ….. and finally morphed itself into “PINK POINTERS” because ….. well we’re proud 45 + women water polo players.

WE ARE WOMEN HEAR US ROAR IN COLOURS TOO PINK TO IGNORE !!!

So what about a coach ?  Well those Dolphins girls who started playing 30 years ago were coached to two grand final wins when they were around 17 years of age by a talented 28 year old player called Mike Stacey, so who better to coach them again later in life. They were a winning combination once, why not again. And now you’re wondering “how successful were they during the Masters comp in 2008 “???    Well a silver medal is a good start for ladies who haven’t played in 10+ years.

But better than a medal, the ladies became unofficial ambassadors for the Perth Masters.  Their pink paraphernalia, wigs, tiaras, boas, combined with the antics that went on in the pool during games proved a real crowd pleaser and attracted attention in and out of the water.  Time-out breaks with Champagne for the reapplication of lipstick, water pistols for referee decisions that weren’t popular, and just all that PINK !  The support crew grew and spectators started turning up to games dressed in pink, carrying banners, balloons and streamers.  Proving that the Pink Pointers spirit is infectious, an American gentleman who was at the Masters playing for a mens team, showed his solidarity by donning some pink bathers and cap and joined the ladies hoping for a berth in one of their games. If you ask Coach Stacey “ what’s their secret ?”  he’ll tell you ….. FUN ….. not too much fact or theory ….. just FUN !
